Kerkini Lake
In the northwestern part of the prefecture of Serres, just 40 km from the town of Serres and about 100 km from Thessaloniki, we find one of the most beautiful places in Greece, Lake Kerkini with its unique wetland, which has been declared a National Park and according to the Ramsar Convention, one of the 10 Wetlands of International Importance in Greece.
It was human intervention that created this paradise. In 1932, the first dam was built on the waters of the river Strymonas and Lake Kerkini was gradually formed.Read here the history of Lake Kerkini.
The lakeside vegetation with riverside forests of wild willows, the water lilies floating in an area of thousands of acres, the wide variety of fish, the buffaloes swimming in the quiet waters of the lake, and the magnificent horizon of the mountain ranges of Mount Belles and Krušia, give the place a unique charm. The lake offers ideal conditions for birdwatching. Today it is one of the best places in Europe for natural observation of about 300 rare and protected species that live and breed here. It is no coincidence that scientists and amateurs from all over the world visit us every year for their studies.
