Dalmatian pelicans and birdwatching at Lake Kerkini

Lake Kerkini is one of Europe’s top birdwatching destinations. More than 300 bird species have been recorded in the National Park, and 137 of them breed here.

The Dalmatian pelican

The Dalmatian pelican is the symbol of the lake. An endangered species, it breeds at Kerkini and gathers here in large numbers in winter. It often comes close to the fishermen’s boats, making for unique photos. You can also see great white pelicans on the lake.

What else you will see

  • Pygmy cormorants, cormorants and herons (little egrets, squacco herons, night herons)
  • Flamingos, avocets and black-winged stilts
  • Birds of prey such as the white-tailed eagle and the imperial eagle

When to come

There are birds all year round. The best periods are winter and the spring and autumn migrations. May and June are ideal for the nesting season.

Birdwatching by boat

The best way to see the birds up close is from the water. We run birdwatching boat trips of 3 to 4 hours, all year round. Afterwards, relax in one of the rooms at Limnaio Guesthouse.
