When to visit Lake Kerkini: a season-by-season guide

Lake Kerkini is worth visiting all year round, but every season has its own character: different birds, different water levels, different light. Here is a short guide to help you choose when to come.

Spring (March – May)

As the snow melts, the water rises and the lakeside forest floods. It is breeding season: herons, cormorants and Dalmatian pelicans nest, and migrating birds pass through. Ideal for birdwatching and photography.

Summer (June – August)

May and June are loved by birdwatchers, as the eggs have hatched. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times for a boat trip, before and after the heat.

Autumn (September – November)

October and November are among the most beautiful months: mist over the water, colours in the forest and birds migrating south.

Winter (December – February)

Kerkini is an important wintering area for the Dalmatian pelican. With snow on Mount Beles in the background, the landscape is magical, and a room with a fireplace is the perfect end to the day.
