The water buffalo of Lake Kerkini

The water buffalo of Lake Kerkini are one of the lake’s most distinctive sights. Their population is estimated at more than 4,000, the largest in Greece.

Where they came from

According to local tradition, the water buffalo arrived in ancient times with the Persians. Today they graze freely on the shores and often wade into the water to cool off.

Where to see them

The herds move through the shallow water and meadows around the lake. You can see them during a boat trip on Lake Kerkini or on a walk along the shore. Keep your distance and do not feed them.

What to taste

Buffalo milk becomes yoghurt, cheese, sweets and ice cream, and the meat becomes sausages and cured meats. They are worth trying at the local tavernas.
